Environment

Over the last decade, Europe’s agricultural sector has made major efforts in the fields of energy and water savings as well in manure management. Duroc d’Olives is proud to say that it complies with the strictest environmental requirements.

Sewage

Before discharging our industrial wastewater, we purify it through a percolation reed bed.

Green energy

We use green energy to heat our company’s buildings. The wood waste from our walnut trees and other trees is used as biomass. So we are totally neutral in terms of CO2! We have also installed solar panels on our roofs, in order to produce our electricity.

Agroforestry

Duroc d’Olives does agroforestry, which is a smart combination of agriculture and pig breeding alongside forestry. So we have planted three rows of 160 walnut trees in our fields. These trees offer shelter to the animals, whilst benefiting the water management of our fields and forming a beautiful green belt around our company.

Circular agriculture

In our new facilities, we use air purifiers to remove the ammonia and any unpleasant smells. Our neighbours are perfectly satisfied with this system! By capturing ammonia, we avoid nitrogen deposits. As a result, there is no risk of us harming the surrounding natural reserves. In the barns, we collect the animals’ manure and store it in tanks. In spring, we make use of this as animal manure to fertilise the fields where we grow cereals and maize, which are in turn used in the pig feed. Thanks to this circular agriculture, we are able to aim for optimal sustainability.
